Just over an hour drive from The Estate House, the ancient city of Kandy was the last capital of the Sri Lankan kings and is a World Heritage Site. Guests can easily take a day trip to visit the beautiful Kandy Lake (Kiri Muhuda) and walk around the city and bazaar, the arts & crafts centre and a gem museum, followed by a visit to the Temple of the Tooth Relic.
Kandy is perhaps most famous however for the annual Perahara, a most magnificent sight which sees the scared tooth relic take to the streets accompanied by dancers, drummers and elephants dressed in all their finery and adorned with lights. The parade continues over ten consecutive days with the number of elephants growing each night. The procession normally takes place annually at the end of July or in early August. Guests are able to enjoy the evenings proceedings in Kandy and return to the property with their car and driver.
On route back to the Estate House a visit to the Peradeniya Botanical Gardens is highly recommended. Dating back to 1371, the gardens are set over 147 acres, with over 4000 species and a spectacular collection of orchids.

Bible Rock is an imposing mountain near the town of Aranayake in the Kegalle District.
It is known as the “Bible rock” due to the shape of the ridge appearing like an open book or bible stretching out along the horizon.
It is a short 30 minute drive from the Estate House to reach the base of the rock and the hike itself takes about 2 hours to summit.
The hike meanders through rubber plantations, streams and forests. Once reaching the summit, the views span over mountains and hills and the fresh air and peacefulness from atop, is a wonder to the mind, body and spirit.
We highly recommend this magical excursion from Rosyth.

Reached in less than a two hour drive from Rosyth, Kittugala is one of the best locations in Sri Lanka to go white water rafting. The Kelani River flows through the Kitulgala’s rock strewn sections and the rapids provide ample pleasure for anyone seeking a rafting experience. The actual run takes about 1 ½ hours to 3 hours depending on how much time you want to spend in the water, during which you will encounter grade 2 and 3 rapids.
The river’s clear water tumbles through a rocky gorge just above Kithulgala. As the river widens, the river passes the scenic location used for the film “Bridge over the river Kwai”, which was filmed in 1956. It is also a great place to jump in for some freshwater swimming.
For those who would like to enjoy the river and its wonderful scenery without the thrills and spills of large rapids, rafting is possible through the flatter section of the lower gorge, suitable for children over six and family groups. We recommend that clients check that their insurance is valid for this hazardous activity.

A mere thirty minutes drive away from Rosyth, the elephant orphanage was established in 1975 by the Department of Wildlife Conservation on a 25-acre (10 ha) coconut plantation on the Maha Oya river. The orphanage was originally founded in order to afford care and protection to the many orphaned elephants found in the jungle.
Today, the orphanage is seen by many visitors as a commercial operation, but remains a top attraction for visitors young and old seeking to get close to elephants. Whilst the baby feeding is popular, the best experience is to watch the elephants walk through the village, followed by their daily bathing in the river. Visitors can sit comfortably in a riverside café whilst the elephants bathe and play.

A full day trip to the Cultural Triangle and a visit to one or more of the World Heritage Sites, works well from the Estate House. The 5th century old rock fortress is a world heritage site, built by King Kashyapa (477-495 AD) and it can be reached in less than 2½ hours from The Estate House.
The ‘Lion Rock’ is a citadel of unusual beauty rising 200 meters from the scrub jungle. The rock was the innermost stronghold of the 70 hectare fortified town, built on top of the rock. A moat, rampart, and extensive gardens including the renowned water gardens ring the base of the rock. As you start to walk up Sigiriya you can visit the world-renowned frescoes of the ‘Heavenly Maidens’ of Sigiriya, which are in a sheltered pocket of the rock approached by a spiral stairway. These frescoes are painted in earth pigments on plaster.
Walking up Sigiriya is not recommended for anyone who is a fear of flights or is not prepared for some strenuous walking as the steps are steep.

Dambulla and the Cave Temple is reached in just over 2 hours from the Estate House.
Donated by king Walagambahu in the 1st century BC to Buddhist monks, Dambulla is a World Heritage site and is the most impressive of Sri Lanka’s cave temples. The complex of five caves with over 2000 sq. meters of painted walls and the ceiling is the largest area of paintings found in the world. These caves contain over 150 images of the Buddha of which the largest is the colossal figure of the Buddha carved out of rock spanning 14 meters.
As you climb up to the temple, surrounded by monkeys which thrive in the area, the view over the surrounding arid countryside unfolds and helps to make this a site not to be missed during a visit to the area.

The Minneriya Tank was created by King Parakarambahu at the height of Polonnaruwa’s glory as the capital of Sri Lanka. The national park based largely around the huge tank (reservoir) was created rather more recently but serves as an important gathering place for Sri Lanka’s large population of elephants. It is a great place for elephant spotting all year round – though as the dry season makes water scarce between June and September, more and more elephants gather on the shores of Minneriya Tank.
Indeed by late August and September, the awe inspiring site of up to 300 elephants can often be seen, in a phenomenon known as ‘The Gathering’. It is the largest concentration and gathering of Asian elephants that can be seen anywhere in the world. Watching baby elephants playing with each other, bull elephants tussling for dominance and the great matriarchs surveying the scene is not a sight you are likely to forget in a hurry. Aside from the elephant, Minneriya is also home to some 23 other species of mammals: some, like the Deer and Sambur you will see, some like the Leopard and the Sloth Bear will probably prove elusive. The arid dry zone is a paradise for many species of Lizard and you will see them here in all their technical colour brilliance if you look carefully enough, as well as snakes like the Indian Python and the Mugger Crocodile. Above all, of course, are Sri Lanka’s wonderfully varied bird population. Among the 150 or so species, particular favorites of ours you may see in Minneriya include the beautiful painted stork, and various other bird species.

A three hour drive away from Rosyth, located in a beautiful and fascinating area of the southern Hill Country, this lofty peak has sparked the imagination for centuries and today remains a place of worship and pilgrimage for most of the main religions in Sri Lanka.
It is variously known as Adam’s Peak, the place where Adam first set foot on earth after being cast out of heaven, Sri Pada, Sacred Footprint, left by the Buddha as he headed towards paradise or Samanalakande, Butterfly Mountain, where butterflies go to die. Some believe the huge ‘footprint’ on the top of the 2243m peak to be that of St Thomas, the early apostle of India, or even of Lord Shiva.
Adam’s peak is generally climbed at night reaching the summit to witness dawn, before descending for a late breakfast. For those who are fit enough and looking for a great walking experience Adam’s is not to be missed.
