HOTEL EXPERIENCES

We invite our guests to partake in the mindful practice of artisan tea making. As part of this unique experience, you will learn all about each step of our tea making process and learn how we produce our unique flavours.
If you are with us for long enough, you can even take some home with you so you can continue with sipping your tea long after you leave the Estate House.
As an artisan tea maker for the day, you will start by joining our ladies in our tea gardens to learn about the art of plucking and help them on their morning round.
Under guidance from our artisans, you will then have the opportunity to hand roll the freshly plucked leaves yourself and return to watch the next process, where the tea is fermented and then dried.
End your experience with a fascinating tea tasting of all of the delicious teas that we make by hand on the estate.

Tea Plucking and Artisan Tea

Sri Lanka is one of the smallest but most biologically diverse countries in Asia. It’s varied climate and topographical conditions have given rise to this rich species diversity. Rosyth Estate House is no exception.
You will undoubtedly meet some of the other inhabitants of the Estate House during your stay but why not grab a pair of binoculars and a bird book and spend an afternoon or morning watching the countless variety of birds; from Sri Lankan Grey Hornbills to Crested Serpent Eagles; or catch a sight of the Langur Monkeys or White Spotted Deer that also call the Rosyth Estate House home. We have a list of the birds that you are most likely to see, some of which are migratory and are only with us November – April.
Our team will guide you to the best spots in our gardens and our estate to sit and be immersed in nature and birds – including our butterfly garden.
Guests can connect with the natural environment at Rosyth through a guided wildlife walk on the estate with our on site naturalist who is on hand to unlock the hidden natural world at the Estate House.
Supporting your well-being through birds and nature is something we strongly believe in at Rosyth. Ornitherapy, a practice of Mindful Birding, stimulates a healthier, more creative headspace through mindful observation while connecting you to the natural world surrounding you.

Wildlife Experiences

Rosyth is a small working estate. Tea is plucked by hand and sold to the nearby tea factory. Latex is tapped, treated and sold to a local rubber factory. Coconuts, fruits, spices and other produce are grown on the estate.
The Estate contains walking trails & mountain biking routes. Guests are free to explore the estate and join the ladies plucking two leaves and a bud from the tea bushes.
Our Estate Superintendent Subramanium, who has worked on the Estate for nearly 40 years, will be happy to guide you through the Estate and give you an appreciation of rural Sri Lankan life as you wind through Paddy Fields, Jungle and Streams and stumble upon some local villagers on the way.
Guided walks with Subramanium last between one and one and a half hours and take place around 4:30 pm as it gets cooler at the end of the day. Morning walks can also be arranged, but Subramanium is normally not available as he is supervising the estate.

Guided Estate Walk

The term ‘forest bathing’ or “shinrin-yoku”, is a term created by the Japanese but it is not a new concept. Many cultures around the world have long recognised the benefits to mental and physical health of immersing yourself in nature.
The Estate House is in the perfect place to enjoy shinrin-yoku. The practice is simple – walking in the rubber fields, tea fields and forest that surround our property. Our guides can conduct silent walks to allow you to consciously connect with the surroundings. A true immersion in nature is good for mental health, wellbeing and relaxation.
If you prefer to walk on your own, you can ask the team for some directions and enjoy forest bathing. The Estate and its surroundings contain beautiful walking trails & mountain biking routes over the rolling hills.
Guests are free to explore the estate and join the ladies plucking tea. There are also walking guides available on site for two of our local trails so you can independently explore our beautiful part of Sri Lanka’s Low Tea Country.

Wandering the Estate

We have two mountain bikes on site at the property that guests are free to use to explore the beautiful countryside along a number of different biking trails. Cycling through rolling hills, paddy fields, rivers and plantations – The Estate House is a stunning location to explore by bike.
Just ask one of our team and they will be able to guide you through our regular trails before you set off and provide all necessary safety equipment.
Electric bikes are available through a supplier in Colombo, which can be a perfect way to travel for those less comfortable cycling uphill! You can contact a member of our team before hand to enquire about costs and availability. We would ask that you provide at least one month’s notice prior to arrival to ensure arrangements can be made.

Mountain Biking

If you chose to join the chefs for a hands on Cooking Lesson, after a relaxed breakfast you will start with a tour of the Organic Kitchen Garden. Our garden has been recently mokey-proofed with fencing to ensure we don’t lose all the produce we grow to our hungry neighbours.
You can of course chose to visit our garden at any time during your stay with us. Either our chefs or our resident gardener, Ranaweera, will be happy to take you for a tour – all you need to do is ask!
From the inception, our menu has been focussed on locally sourced food. In the past ten years we have adapted our menus to include ingredients from our Kitchen Garden to reduce our carbon footprint and bring the freshest ingredients onto your plate. The chefs and gardeners have come together to create a space that will allow us to protect our produce from the marauding monkeys and allow our guests to enjoy more food grown on site.
We proudly produce a large variety of fruit and vegetables including, banana, jack fruit, mango, papaya, coconut, cloves, pepper, tomatoes, aubergine, curry leaves, rampe, lemongrass, pumpkin.

Organic Kitchen Garden

Join our chefs for a hands on Cooking Lesson.  After a relaxed breakfast, at around 10:30 you can start with a tour of the Organic Kitchen Garden. On your return to the kitchen, you will have the opportunity to cook authentic Sri Lankan curries. You may be joined by other guests with the maximum of eight. The menu has been designed to include ingredients which are available in Europe.
Your hands-on cooking class will include a fish or chicken curry and three other vegetable curries and a traditional salad. Sit down for lunch in the dining room set in the canopy of the trees with the curries that you have cooked and enjoy your lunch with the rice and poppadum’s.
Accompanying the main curries are a range of sambals and vegetable curries such as green bean, lentil and spinach, aubergine & gotukola sambal. When you sit for lunch we will serve you red or white rice, poppadom and homemade chutneys. You will have the recipes to take home and we suggest you purchase the spices from a local supermarket to guarantee you have everything you need to re-create.
Our cooking experience is suitable for those with all dietary requirements but it is best to let us know in advance so that we can ensure we adapt the menu to your needs.
Due to the restrictions with the numbers in the kitchen, we would suggest that you pre book and prepay your cooking class prior to arrival. Please advise your dietary preference.

Sri Lankan Cooking Experience

Our complimentary daily yoga sessions are the best way to start your day.
The yoga pavilion is set amongst the trees, immersed in the sounds of the birds and nature.  The early mornings provide a respite from the heat and enable you to stretch, strengthen and relax as the sun rises and glimmers through the forest
Sessions start at 07:00, finish around 07:45 and are suitable for all levels.
However, please feel free to grab a mat and find a quiet space for your private yoga practice around the many perfect spots in our grounds. Private yoga classes are also available at other times and can be arranged by talking with one of our spa therapists.

Yoga

The Rock Spa nestled in the trees below the Line and Coconut room is a place of tranquillity and indulgence. We offer a small range of treatments which are more fully described in the Spa menu on our website.
Whether to relax after the flight, or indulge in a two hour treatment, our spa is here to relax and rejuvenate you. Our oils and treatments are a fusion of traditional Sri Lankan techniques with the best of Asian massages.
We recommend treatments are booked in advance of arrival to ensure that you are not disappointed, as we currently have two male therapists on site.

Spa and Wellness

Through the Rosyth Foundation we are currently providing three school breakfast meals per week at one of our local schools. We understand how vital breakfast is for children learning effectively and we are proud of the support we are able to provide through our funding and donations received.
Guests are invited to join our team with serving the breakfast to the kids at the local school. It is a fantastic chance to meet our local community.
We do not serve breakfast on non-school days or public holidays so it is best to check with our team in advance if this is something you would like to do.

Breakfast at a Local School

Surprise your children with a ‘Treesure hunt’. Our ‘Treesure hunt’ is a fun and interactive activity for children to engage with the natural environment around the property. Our staff will scatter the picture cards of the fruit and spices that grow on our trees and bushes in the gardens around the house.
The cards will be placed at the base of the tree/plant and all they have to do is locate each one! With such a large selection of fruit and spices growing around the house, it is a fantastic way for your children to learn more. Our team will of course be happy to help guide younger children around our grounds during the hunt. The trees and plants to find include papaya, coffee, lime, pepper, rambutan, jack, coconut, cinnamon, clove, tea, avocado & cardamom. The activity is suitable for children 3-11 and we suggest parents should supervise.
We ask for a small charge of $10 per child with the funds given to the local school that we support. Please prebook and pay locally.
Other fun activities available for children include nature walks with our naturalist looking for butterflies, monkeys and the other wildlife that call Rosyth their home.

Kid's Activities

Guests are invited to walk down to the beautiful Pahan Kanuwa Temple, located in a nearby village. Visitors can walk around the tranquil grounds and learn more about Buddhist culture and the tales and myths surrounding the temple’s origins and why it was first built.
The temple snakes around a stream and the structures are stunningly built into the surrounding rocks. Idyllically set on the edge of a large paddy field in the valley, this experience is a fantastic way to explore the local area and meet some villagers along the way.
The walk takes around 40 minutes from our property and slightly longer on the way back. The bicycle ride is much quicker there but again, is more challenging on the way back. Arrangements can be made to collect guests if they did not wish to walk back.
